Recognition of outstanding entrepreneurial achievement and exemplary social commitment // Academic acknowledgement of Strauss’s pioneering brand leadership through a Chair and Visiting Professorship in “Business and Brand Leadership”
The German entrepreneur Henning Strauss, CEO of the workwear brand STRAUSS, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the renowned Pepperdine University in California – his alma mater. With the conferment of the “Doctor of Business Administration (honoris causa), Pepperdine University, USA”, the university recognises his outstanding entrepreneurial achievement. In addition, Strauss’s pioneering understanding of modern brand leadership will be accorded academic recognition from the fall semester of 2027 onwards through the Chair of “Business and Brand Leadership”, combined with a visiting professorship. At the same time, the award is an acknowledgement of the exemplary social commitment of the 49-year-old, which is shaped by Pepperdine’s guiding principle “For Greater Purpose”.
As the first German in the history of the renowned Pepperdine University, entrepreneur and brand strategist Henning Strauss is receiving the honorary doctorate in California – US universities rarely bestow this distinction on international figures, particularly on business leaders. On 2 May 2026, the 49-year-old was honoured as part of the Graduation Ceremony in Malibu and subsequently delivered the commencement address in front of more than 10,000 guests.
Strauss’s entrepreneurial work has long been noticed in the USA as well. Under his leadership, the family company from the Main-Kinzig district in the German state of Hesse has developed into the European market leader in the field of workwear. In doing so, it has succeeded in redefining an entire product category and making a brand desirable worldwide. In 2024, STRAUSS took the step into the US market and adapted its brand strategy to this new environment. A key element of the American success story is the extensive cooperation with Major League Baseball, through which Strauss has made sponsorship history. STRAUSS was the first brand ever to place its logo on the helmets of baseball players. For this, Strauss was honoured with the Sponsor of the Year Award in 2025.
In addition to Strauss’s entrepreneurial achievements, the honorary doctorate also pays tribute to his social commitment, which is likewise shaped by Pepperdine’s maxim “For Greater Purpose”. Through the ALEA FOUNDATION and the ALEA SCHOOL, Henning Strauss has invested a nine-figure sum in the infrastructure of his hometown Bad Orb and was made an honorary citizen in recognition of this engagement. Here, too, he contributed his brand expertise to the repositioning of the spa destination.
FROM AMERICA BACK TO THE FAMILY BUSINESS
At the Christian Pepperdine University in liberal California, Strauss studied marketing and graduated in 2001. A longer period of work in New York had been planned afterwards. Due to the events of 11 September 2001, his path led back to the family business earlier than expected. Strauss became a member of the management team in the same year. Together with his brother Steffen and his father Norbert, he initiated a comprehensive brand relaunch and placed the focus on product development. With their reinterpretation of workwear, the family succeeded in rethinking an entire industry and bringing about lasting change to the skilled trades sector. hrough sports sponsorships, striking brand collaborations with Metallica, and high-end film and photo productions in Hollywood, the brand was emotionally charged in line with Strauss’s understanding of branding. Today, the company is a global player with annual revenue of 1.4 billion euros.
THE MLB COUP – STRAUSS HITS A HOME RUN IN THE USA
Henning Strauss is also pursuing his sports sponsorship strategy consistently in America. As a newcomer, he seized the opportunity to link his brand with Major League Baseball (MLB). Alongside football, baseball is one of the most popular sports among American families and, in terms of its cultural significance, is comparable to football in Europe. The coup: STRAUSS was the first company in MLB history to place its logo on helmets in the postseason – that is, during the playoffs. For his courage and pioneering spirit, Henning Strauss was named Sponsor of the Year in 2025 by the Sponsorship Marketing Association.
Strauss attaches great importance, in the global expansion of his brand, to a product portfolio adapted to local culture and climate. In addition to integrating American materials such as US cotton and generating local value creation through Made-in-USA production, STRAUSS also adapts its iconic work trousers to local wearing habits and climatic conditions. The end user and their needs have always been at the centre of product development at this German family business.
TOP UNIVERSITY DEDICATES CHAIR TO STRAUSS
The successful development of STRAUSS into the European market leader in workwear and the determined expansion into the US market make Strauss a valuable brand ambassador for the values-oriented Pepperdine University, where Henning Strauss graduated in 2001. With the Chair in “Business and Brand Leadership”, Strauss’s understanding of modern brand management, corporate culture and social responsibility will be given academic recognition and institutional anchoring at Pepperdine University from the fall semester of 2027 onwards. The chair bears the name “Henning Strauss Endowed Chair in Business and Brand Leadership”. In addition, Strauss himself will teach at Pepperdine University as a visiting professor.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY
Pepperdine University is a Christian-influenced university in Malibu, California. Founded in 1937, the institution specialises in the fields of business, law, education, psychology and the humanities and is characterised by a personal learning environment, small class sizes and close supervision. The campus in Malibu is considered one of the most inspiring places to study worldwide and offers a formative learning environment with views of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to academic performance, Pepperdine promotes personal development and social engagement, guided by its core values of Purpose, Service and Leadership.
ALEA FOUNDATION AND ALEA SCHOOL
Pepperdine’s understanding of values also shapes Henning Strauss’s work in his hometown of Bad Orb. With remarkable determination, Strauss founded the ALEA SCHOOL – from the initial idea to the first lesson – within just one and a half years as a non-profit school. The bilingual secondary school (Gymnasium) is based on the concept of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and concludes with the IB Diploma. The aim is, together with educational partners from academia, nature education and culture, as well as in cooperation with international partner schools, to develop young people into global citizens and socially engaged individuals. The future Campus Parkallee will also reflect this ambition spatially: for the projected 200 ALEA students, there will be, among other things, a dedicated music studio, a dōjō, a “Dinotorium” and both a palm house and an azalea house.
In addition, Strauss has invested a nine-figure sum in the green-blue infrastructure of his hometown Bad Orb. As patron of ALEA PARK, Strauss aims to raise greater awareness of the value of botany and has comprehensively restored the upper spa gardens – personally selecting the botanical rarities, from sequoias to magnolias. Alongside education and nature, Strauss is also deliberately strengthening the medical dimension of the location: the BALNOVA bathhouse and health centre, financed by Strauss, is a progressive medical concept that combines medical-therapeutic practice and research in the fields of radiology, sports surgery, orthopaedics, balneology and physiotherapy.
In principle, anyone can apply for a scholarship. The award committee will take various criteria into account when selecting the scholarship holders: First and foremost, the economic eligibility of an applicant family. This is based on the average household income (approx. €70,000) in the Main-Kinzig district and the applicant confirms that they have a lower household income. Voluntary commitment, special achievements or a particularly convincing application are also taken into account.
When applying for a scholarship, applicants must provide basic information, a letter of motivation and a letter of recommendation from a (class) teacher. After submission, the awarding committee will review the application and contact the applicants regarding the next steps.
At the present moment, two scholarship programs have already been confirmed.
Further scholarship programs are currently being developed.
There will be both full and partial scholarships. Depending on the type of scholarship, either all or part of the school fees will be covered by the scholarship. Both scholarship models cover tuition fees up to the 10th grade to the extent indicated.
